Alf Pritchatt was in World War I. In his last battle, he was told to "go over the top," meaning crawl out of the trenthes and run toward the enemy firing at whatever he could. Millions of soldiers died in those terrible "no-man's lands" between the trenches. Alf Pritchatt was one. As he charged toward the German line, he was puzzled to see the Germans running past him as though they didn't see him. Of course, he was dead and didn't realize it. He jumped into a bomb crater and huddled in its safety. He feel asleep, and when he awoke, saw a bright light.
