Alfred Higgins had learned from his guide, whom he describes as a teacher of many people, how to have after-death communication contact through focusing his thoughts. He then says that his guide tells him that if he wants to get a message through to his wife, he'll have to influence her to attend a Spiritualist church, where at the time mediums gave messages from the deceased. There, he could influence the medium to give his wife a message. He decided to try having his wife attend a Spiritualist church and to influence the medium to give her a message. The rest of the description is a striking portrayal of what people describe as coincidences or synchronicities that bring them to do something that results in an after-death communication; Higgins is doing the work to make it happen, as the deceased apparently do commonly.
His continued thoughts to influence her over 18 months finally impress her to attend a Spiritualist church meeting, but he is pretty unconfident in the medium. He describes how he influenced the medium to tell his wife about the fact that he had been killed by falling off a ladder to give her something meaningful his wife would understand. The medium received the message, in part, but interpreted it badly. She told his wife she saw a ladder and interpreted it as meaning she was going to be rising, going up the ladder of having good luck. Higgins expresses his disdain for her. But he gets his name through to the medium. Finally, his wife gets the message that it might be him.
Higgins tries another message that will be more convincing for his wife. He impresses the medium to tell his wife about the wedding ring she wears that is not the ring he gave her. She had lost the wedding ring he gave her and bought an identical ring so he wouldn't know she had lost it. She never told him. When the medium finally received a correct message about the ring and told his wife, it was a revelation and a clear indication to her that he was still alive, just not in a body. Higgins comments that he gave the medium what was probably her best session ever.
